RSO (Revier Südost)

About the Project
The RSO is located on the site of the former Bärenquell brewery in Berlin-Niederschöneweide. The listed brewery complex was built from 1882 onwards and continues to shape the site with its historic brick buildings. Since 2020, the site has been used by the team behind the former Griessmuehle as a new cultural and event venue.

Initial Situation
The outdoor area of the RSO opened in September 2020. Until the dance ban was introduced at the beginning of November, there were massive complaints from the surrounding neighborhood about noise.
Before the opening, the sound system was set up by Kirsch Audio. In the low-frequency range, cancellation and directivity were used to keep unwanted sound as low as possible. FA Lütronic identified the relevant immission points and adjusted the system in accordance with the applicable guidelines.
Despite these measures and the correct level adjustment, the complaints continued. This was followed by almost weekly follow-up measurements. These confirmed that the emissions caused by the sound system complied with the applicable limit values. Even after the environmental agency informed local residents about this, the complaints did not decrease.

Measures

1. Improved Active Sound Protection
Together with Kirsch Audio, a new concept for active sound protection was developed. The aim was to eliminate unwanted sound emissions across the entire frequency spectrum as far as possible and to direct the sound more precisely.

2. Cardioid Speakers
Cardioid speakers were used for the bass and midrange. The cardioid bass speakers were arranged in two rows. This allows sound to be cancelled out more strongly to the sides and towards the rear. The rear cancellation is further enhanced by the two-row arrangement.

Result
The new sound system concept was intended to control the spread of sound more precisely and, in particular, to further limit it in the direction of the surrounding neighborhood. The two-row arrangement of the cardioid bass speakers further enhances the rear cancellation.
