About the Project
Alte Münze is a historic listed building complex in Berlin-Mitte. Since 2013, its spaces have been used for events, and the site has been gradually developed further. The historic character of the buildings also presents particular challenges when it comes to soundproofing.
Initial Situation
The soundproofing issue has existed for several years. As the site was used and developed more extensively, it became clear that the existing structural soundproofing was not sufficient. The historic buildings make it difficult to improve sound insulation afterwards and require more complex measures.
Measures
1. Improving Room Acoustics
Additional sound-absorbing surfaces were installed to improve the room acoustics. This reduces unwanted sound reflections and makes it easier to control how sound spreads within the event spaces.
2. Controlling Low Frequencies
Measures to specifically control low frequencies help to better manage low-frequency sound in particular. The sound systems are calibrated and limited under realistic operating conditions.
3. Room Separation and Structural Soundproofing
Additional measures to separate the spaces improved sound insulation between the event areas and adjacent parts of the building.
4. Further Measures for Long-Term Improvement
Further structural and technical improvements are planned for the event areas. These include additional soundproofing vestibules and soundproof doors, improved insulation of windows and roof areas, as well as suitable ventilation systems. This should make it possible to keep windows and doors closed during events.
Result
The measures already implemented in the areas of sound absorption, low-frequency control and room separation have significantly improved soundproofing. Alte Münze considers the project a success. At the same time, further funding is needed, as additional steps are required for a comprehensive solution.
