ARKAODA

About the project
Arkaoda was originally founded in Istanbul and opened its Berlin location at Karl-Marx-Platz in Neukölln in 2018. The club is known for its musical diversity and experimental sounds, combining concerts, DJ sets and club nights. From post-punk and krautrock to dub, ambient and electronic music, Arkaoda provides space for different musical scenes and artistic forms.

Initial situation
During events, a resident of the neighbouring building complained about noise. The main problem was low-frequency vibration travelling through the building structure from the venue to the connected neighbouring building. The aim was to stop this transmission and prevent further complaints from the neighbouring apartment.

Measures

1. Structural separation of the buildings
The venue, the former bowling hall and the neighbouring building were structurally separated. The existing connections between the buildings were cut through, from the foundation and floor slab to the walls and supporting structures and below the foundation.

2. Decoupling the floor and supporting structure
The foundation was removed in the area of the separation and rebuilt with a new joint. The floor slab was also cut through with a wide joint. The necessary supporting beams were mounted on Sylomer to further reduce the transmission of structural vibrations.

Result
The construction work was more complex than initially expected because of the approximately 100-year-year-old building structure. The exact position and construction of the foundations, walls and supporting structures were not fully known, so the plans had to be adapted several times. This delayed the completion of the project and led to additional costs.

The work was nevertheless completed and the problem of structural vibration transmission was resolved. The sound system was then adjusted and levelled again. Since reopening, Arkaoda has been able to use low-frequency sound again without further complaints from the affected resident. This has secured the continued operation of the venue.
