CASHMERE RADIO

About the Project
Cashmere Radio is a non-profit experimental community radio station with a studio in Berlin-Wedding. The station combines online radio with a publicly accessible studio and provides a space for music, talks, live performances and artistic experimentation. In addition to regular radio programmes, the studio also hosts live sessions and events.

Initial Situation
The studio is used both as a recording studio and as an event space. Its use had already led to conflicts with the surrounding neighborhood. In summer 2025, there were several complaints to the police and a visit from the local public order office. To improve the situation, organisational measures were introduced first. These included raising guests’ awareness of the neighborhood, particularly when leaving the studio and when crossing the courtyard at night.
A soundproofing assessment also recommended replacing the existing windows and limiting the possibility of opening the windows at night.

Measures

1. Replacement of the Windows
The three existing wooden windows in the studio were completely replaced with new windows. The old windows were partly poorly sealed and could no longer be closed properly.

The new windows feature triple insulating glazing and specialised soundproof glass. This significantly improved the studio’s sound insulation. The glazing provides sound insulation of up to 49 dB.

The new windows were also designed so that only certain elements can be opened. This helps prevent sound from escaping through widely opened windows, particularly at night.

Result
Replacing the windows has noticeably improved the sound insulation of the studio. At the same time, thermal insulation was improved and sound transmission through open windows was reduced. The structural measures complement the organisational measures and help make the continued use of Cashmere Radio’s studio and event space more compatible with the surrounding neighborhood.
