JONNY KNÜPPEL
About the Project
Jonny Knüppel is an experimental, collectively run cultural venue in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. The project combines events and club culture with an open and inclusive approach.
Initial Situation
To sustainably reduce noise emissions at the site and improve the quality of the space, the Salon was rebuilt and comprehensively upgraded with soundproofing measures. The aim was to reduce both noise escaping to the outside and unwanted sound within the venue.
Measures
1. Soundproofing for the Generator
The generator was fitted with a soundproof enclosure. This reduced operating noise by 15 dB(A).
2. Directional Sound System
A 6.1 sound system with directional hybrid bass arrays was installed. This is designed to specifically limit the spread of low-frequency sound.
3. Soundproofing in the Outdoor Area
Containers, scaffolding and greenery were used as a continuous soundproofing structure around the site. They help contain sound while also being integrated into the design of the outdoor area.
4. Rebuilding the “Bunga”
The previous “Bunga” extension was dismantled and rebuilt using containers. A combined approach to soundproofing and room acoustics was used.
5. Rebuilding the “Salon”
The Salon was newly constructed as a shell building. At the time of the project report, completion was planned for autumn 2024.
Result
The measures created an expandable soundproofing concept that can be adapted flexibly thanks to the mobile and reusable construction using ISO containers. The soundproofing measures improve both protection for the surrounding area and the acoustic conditions within the cultural venue.
