KM28
About the project
KM28 is a venue for contemporary and experimental music in Berlin-Neukölln. Concerts and various musical events take place at the venue.
Initial situation
KM28 is located in a residential building. Despite an agreement allowing concerts between 8:30 and 10:00 pm, neighbours repeatedly complained about vibrations caused by bass and drums. In one case, they threatened legal action.
Measures
1. Soundproofing the walls
Additional insulated walls were installed in front of the existing walls.
2. Insulation of water pipes
All water pipes in the venue were insulated.
3. Decoupling the concrete floor
A channel was cut around the perimeter of the concrete floor, allowing it to be structurally decoupled from the surrounding building.
4. Soundproofing the windows
Most windows facing the courtyard were acoustically insulated.
5. Additional ceiling layer
An additional layer of drywall was installed on the ceiling.
Result
The vibrations perceived by the neighbours have been significantly reduced. The neighbours are now more satisfied with the concert situation and no longer threaten legal action.
The project required the venue to close for more than three months. For cost reasons, not all planned walls could be insulated, and the planned replacement of the front and side doors could not be carried out.
