SAGE

About the project
Sage Beach is located directly on the Spree in Berlin-Kreuzberg and is part of the SAGE complex, which includes a restaurant, beach club and other event spaces. The venue combines open-air culture, music and events with its distinctive beach and riverside setting.
Initial situation
Sage Beach had its own sound system, which did not allow for targeted sound cancellation. For larger events, an external sound system therefore had to be used to achieve directional bass cancellation.
At the same time, there had been repeated complaints from the surrounding neighbourhood, particularly about low-frequency sound. The bass sometimes spread uncontrollably and was perceived as disruptive in the surrounding area. The aim was therefore to maintain the sound quality for guests while significantly reducing sound emissions towards the neighbourhood.
Measures
1. Cardioid Bass Loudspeakers
Special cardioid bass loudspeakers were installed. They direct sound towards the audience while reducing sound radiation to the rear, towards the surrounding neighbourhood.
2. Optimisation of Loudspeaker Positioning
The positioning and alignment of the loudspeakers were optimised using precise calculations. This focuses the sound more strongly on the event area and minimises unwanted sound propagation into the surrounding areas.
3. New Soundproofing Wall
A solid soundproofing wall was constructed instead of the previously planned soundproofing film.
Result
The planned measures were implemented without any significant difficulties. According to the project report, the intended effect was achieved: sound quality and volume for the audience were maintained, while bass radiation towards the surrounding neighbourhood was significantly reduced. Sound level measurements showed a noticeable reduction in sound pressure levels, particularly in the low-frequency range.
The project received the highest possible evaluation. The experience shows that good sound quality and improved protection of the surrounding neighbourhood can be achieved through targeted technical planning.
